Direct photons from relativistic heavy ion collisions at CERN SPS and at RHIC

Assuming QGP as the initial state, we have analyzed the direct photon data, obtained by the WA98 collaboration, in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS. It was shown, that for small thermalisation time, two loop rate contribute substantially to high pTp_T photons. We argue that for extremely short thermalisation time scale, the higher loop contribution should not be neglected. For thermalisation time 0.4 fm or greater, when higher loop contribution are not substantial, the initial temperature of the QGP is not large and the system does not produce enough hard pTp_T photons to fit the WA98 experiment. For initial time in the ranges of 0.4-1.0 fm, WA98 data could be fitted only if the fluid has initial radial velocity in the range of 0.3-0.5c. The model was applied to predict photon spectrum at RHIC energy.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Field-Induced Effects of Anisotropic Magnetic Interactions in SrCu2(BO3)2

We observed a field-induced staggered magnetization in the 2D frustrated dimer-singlet spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 by 11B NMR, from which the magnitudes of the intradimer Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and the staggered g-tensor were determined. These anisotropic interactions cause singlet-triplet mixing and eliminate a quantum phase transition at the expected critical field Hc for gap closing. They also provide a quantitative account for some puzzling phenomena such as the onset of a uniform magnetization below the and the persistence of the excitation gap above Hc. The gap was accurately determined from the activation energy of the nuclear relaxation rate.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, published versio

Effect of pyridoxine treatment of a homocystinuric patient on the urinary excretion of some sulfur-containing amino acids

The effect of pyridoxine treatment of a homocystinuric patient on the urinary excretion of some sulfur-containing amino acids was studied and the following results were obtained. As a result of pyridoxine treatment, urinary homocystine decreased to a fairly great extent, and its unusual metabolites S.(3-hydroxy-3-carboxyn- propylthio) homocysteine (HCPTHC) and S-C8-carboxyethylthio homocysteine (j3-CETHC) increased to some extent. But its oxidation product (homocysteic acid) showed a tendency to decrease slightly. Urinary methionine and cystine increased to some extent, but cysteinehomocysteine mixed disulfide showed no remarkable change.</p

Current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistance of a spin valve using Co2MnSi Heusler alloy electrodes

We report the current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistance of a spin valve with Co2MnSi (CMS) Heusler alloy ferromagnetic electrodes. A multilayer stack of Cr/Ag/Cr/CMS/Cu/CMS/Fe25Co75/Ir28Mn72/Ru was deposited on a MgO (001) single crystal substrate. The bottom CMS layer was epitaxially grown on the Cr/Ag/Cr buffer layers and was ordered to the L21 structure after annealing at 673 K. The upper CMS layer was found to grow epitaxially on the Cu spacer layer despite the large lattice mismatch between Cu and CMS. The highest MR ratios of 8.6% and 30.7% for CPP-GMR were recorded at room temperature and 6 K, respectively. The high spin polarization of the epitaxial CMS layers is the most likely origin of the high MR ratio.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, presented at the 53rd Annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, to be published in J.
